Who Is Julian Nagelsmann? Career Profile Of Former Bayern Munich Boss And Favourite To Be Next Chelsea Manager

Julian Nagelsmann is currently the overwhelming favourite to assume the vacant manager’s post at Chelsea, following the sacking of Graham Potter on Sunday. Here’s a look at what the German mastermind has achieved so far in his relatively short managerial career.

Nagelsmann began his career as a professional footballer as a youngster – however, he retired at the incredibly early age of 20 due to several major injuries. He didn’t want to leave football entirely, though – instead, he took on several coaching roles at Hoffenheim, before eventually becoming their first-team manager in 2016.

In 2017, Nagelsmann guided Die Kraichgauer to a 1-0 win over Bayern Munich in a historic upset. He didn’t win any trophies during his time at Hoffenheim, but he is extremely highly regarded by the club nonetheless.

In 2019, Nagelsmann signed a contract to be the new RB Leipzig manager, after guiding Hoffenheim to Champions League qualification. He took Leipzig to a Champions League semi-final in his first season with the club – unfortunately, once there, they were beaten 3-0 by PSG.

The season after this, Nagelsmann took Leipzig to a DFP-Pokal final, but they were defeated by Borussia Dortmund by a score of 4-1. On April 27, 2021, he was officially appointed as manager of Bayern Munich – the team he beat with Hoffenheim all those years ago.

He was ruthlessly sacked by Bayern on March 24, 2023, despite having a win percentage of 71.4% to his name. Many viewed the decision as harsh – but Bayern’s loss could be Chelsea’s gain.

So far, Nagelsmann has won just one major trophy throughout his career – the Bundesliga title, which he obtained last season with Bayern. How many more could he possibly win if he is given the Chelsea job?
