Vinicius scores a hat-trick in Real Madrid’s 4-1 El Clasico Spanish Super Cup final defeat of Barcelona
El Clasico brought drama and spectacular goals once again as Real Madrid defeated Barcelona 4-1 in the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia.
Real avenged their 3-1 loss to Barcelona in the 2023 final with a spectacular first-half hat trick as Jude Bellingham and Rodrygo put him free for his first two goals against a monstrous Barcelona high-line. After Lewandowski made it 2-1, Vini completed his hat trick from the penalty spot after Ronald Araujo fouled him.
Real controlled possession in the second half as Rodrygo scored a fourth and Araujo was issued a second yellow card as Barcelona completed the game with 10 men as Real stroked the ball around with ease.
Xavi was naturally saddened by the setback, but Carlo Ancelotti has won yet another championship with Real (his 11th trophy), and despite the roster being somewhat smaller this season, it appears like Real is ushering in a new age of domination in Spanish football.
Real won the first Clasico of the season on Oct. 28 with a 2-1 victory away at the Camp Nou, and they have now defeated their fiercest rivals to win the Super Cup.
Real Madrid’s season-long narrative has been new signing Jude Bellingham, who continues to demonstrate why Birmingham City was willing to make him a statue subject while he was still a youngster.
Real Madrid boasts the greatest points-per-game average in La Liga, but they are a point behind Girona, the unexpected Catalan powerhouse that leads the league. Carlo Ancelotti’s defence has only conceded 11 goals in league action and has the highest goal differential in La Liga at plus-29. With the understanding of Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo, and Bellingham supplying the x-factor in attack, they currently have one trophy under their arm and are seeking to win La Liga and the Champions League.
Long-term injuries to Gavi, Marcos Alonso, and Marc-Andre ter Stegen have had a significant impact on the club, while Raphinha and Joao Cancelo were also out for the Super Cup final.
Barcelona is seven points behind Real Madrid and has a match in hand on Girona, so the reigning champions aren’t far away from retaining their crown. However, the manner in which Real was defeated will serve as a wake-up call for Xavi and co.
