Description of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is one of ten faculties at Stellenbosch University, and it offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the Arts (Drama, Music, and Visual Arts), Languages (African Languages, Afrikaans and Dutch, Ancient Studies, English, General Linguistics, and Modern Foreign Languages), and Social Sciences (Geography and Environmental Studies; History; Information Science; Journalism; Philosophy; Political Science; Psychology; Social Work; and Sociology and Social Anthropology).

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation was created in 1969 by the merger of two organizations, the Avalon Foundation and the Old Dominion Foundation. The Foundation is a non-profit organization that is the largest sponsor of the arts and humanities in the United States.

Higher Learning, Arts and Culture, Public Knowledge, and Humanities in Place are the Foundation’s four core program areas. Stellenbosch University’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is happy to announce a limited number of full-time scholarships for Master’s (100% research) or PhD studies in collaboration with the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Scholarships are offered in all of our Faculty’s fields, however this particular scholarship money is only available for a research project that fits into one of the following categories: • Anthropocene and Ecocriticism • African Cultural Studies • Studies in Identity, Gender, and/or Queerness

Other Considerations

CRITERIA FOR ELIGIBILITY • Applicants must have a minimum of 75% on their prior degree. • Applicants are required to provide a writing sample with their application: MA thesis for PhD candidates MA candidates’ honours research essays Any scholarly publications connected to your application that have been published • Applicants must be under 30 at the time of application for a Master’s scholarship and under 35 for a PhD scholarship. • Applicants must apply to study at Stellenbosch University in addition to this scholarship application. It is not necessary for applicants to be registered or to have a supervisor.

Before submitting an application, they should inquire about the availability of suitable supervisors in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in their specific field of research. RECOMMENDATIONS • A published record; • Awards or grants earned; • Relevant professional experience; and • The ability to utilize any language(s) other than English for academic purposes. REQUIREMENTS AND APPLICATION PROCESS • An official application form; • A motivation letter (no more than 600 words); • A preliminary research proposal (no more than 1000 words) outlining the unique contribution your research will make to the existing body of knowledge in the specific field of study, the problem statement, the methodology / theoretical framework / philosophical underpinnings you intend to use, and the feasibility of your study;

• A certified copy of your full academic transcript; • A certified copy of your Honours or MA degree certificate – or foreign equivalent (if you have completed the qualification but have not yet received the certificate, official proof from the institution concerned that the degree will be delivered); (for international students).

In addition to tuition fees and an allowance, the PhD fellowship may cover research activities such as a writing retreat, conference participation, and publication costs up to R52 500, depending on an application completed during the study time. In addition to tuition fees and an allowance, the Masters scholarship may cover research activities with your supervisor, such as a writing retreat, conference participation, and publication costs up to R20 375, depending on an application completed during the study time.
