Transfer Decision Expected In ‘Days’ As Chelsea Make Last Ditch Effort To Persuade £52M Midfielder

Sporting Lisbon midfielder Manuel Ugarte is set to make a decision on whether to sign for Chelsea or Paris Saint-Germain in a matter of “days”, according to O’Jogo.

Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino is determined to secure the Uruguayan international’s signature but the competition from PSG is believed to be fierce.

Both teams are prepared to pay Ugarte’s €60m (£52m) release clause but there is reportedly a sizeable difference between the two clubs in terms of wages.

It had been initially suggested that Chelsea had only offered the 22-year-old €2m a year (after tax) but O Jogo claim the Blues are now offering €3m per season, which works out at around £90,000 a week (before tax).

Ugarte is said to be keen on playing in the Premier League so the modest salary may not put him off, but we shall have to wait and see.

Ugarte is one of two midfield transfer targets that Chelsea are pursuing

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Brighton’s Moises Caicedo could also be targeted by Chelsea if and when they do snap up Ugarte.

Caicedo would, however, be a costly outlay, with reports claiming that the Seagulls could hold out for around £75m for the Ecuadorian international.

There is also thought to be a lot of competition for Caicedo’s services, with Liverpool and, more significantly, Arsenal targeting the player.

The Gunners had two bids rejected for the 21-year-old in the January transfer window and there are now suggestions that he would prefer a move to a Champions League club, giving Mikel Arteta’s side a major advantage.

For the time being, though, the focus is on getting Ugarte through the door. O Jogo say that Pochettino is “pressuring” Chelsea to get the deal done “as soon as possible” so there could be more developments very soon.
