Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag will be anxious to keep the momentum going against Southampton after finally winning his first game in charge.

There was perhaps no one happier than the new manager after orchestrating a 2-1 win against Liverpool on Monday night, having rested captain Harry Maguire and icon Cristiano Ronaldo. The focus now shifts to the south coast and two away games.

Southampton also won their first game of the season, defeating Leicester, and now play United and Chelsea before the end of the month.

Team news

Erik ten Hag will be tempted to give Casemiro his debut, but possibly not right away. Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire will be aware that they are unlikely to be reinstated to the starting lineup following Monday night.

Anthony Martial is sidelined due to an Achilles injury. Victor Lindelof, Facundo Pellistri, and Brandon Williams remain out.

“Martial came out with an Achilles injury, so he’s out of the game,” Ten Hag said. “I can’t tell you how long it will take. I’m hoping he’ll be able to play in the next game.”

“Casemiro is in good shape. He completed all of the training sessions. He trained separately at first, then with the squad during the last days.”

Prediction

Manchester United’s confidence is finally on the up, and the players look to be listening to the manager based on their performance against Liverpool.

Saturday, on the other hand, presents a different work and a different form of drive.

Ralph Hasenhuttl is in a similar scenario, but I believe United’s greater quality will come through.

Manchester  United triumphs 2-1.
