Every year brings scandals in the Nigerian entertainment business, and 2023 is no exception, as numerous celebrities made headlines for a variety of reasons, including marital troubles, industry conflicts, false charges, inflammatory statements, and many more.

Here are some of the most controversial celebrities who made headlines in 2022:

1. Alex Ekubo And Fancy:  Following the divorce of Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo and his Fiancee, Fancy Acholonu, in 2022, things became even more complicated in January 2023 when some of their secrets in a private conversation spilled online, sparking speculations that the movie star is gay.

Despite spending five years together, Fancy said in the WhatsApp exchanges that everything felt wrong in their relationship.

According to one thread, Fancy was verbally and emotionally harassed once their relationship became public, and they never became intimate. Nonetheless, Alex did not reject or corroborate the charges.

2. Yomi Casual homosexual Accusation:  Following the social media uproar in January between Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo and estranged girlfriend Fancy Acholonu, a notorious Instagram blogger claimed that Yomi Casual is homosexual.

Yomi, in response to the news at the time, cursed people who said he was homosexual or harboured such thoughts on his Instagram profile.

He said that the lies were the product of envy, jealousy, evil, and insecurity.

3. Wunmi Toriola And Husband: Following the breakdown of Nollywood actress Wunmi Toriola’s marriage, the husband claimed in a leaked chat that the movie star physically attacked his mother.

Their marriage, he claimed, was filled of violence, treachery, and deception, and there was nothing amazing about it.

Wunmi Toriola’s spouse went on to say that the marriage was an utter failure.

In a statement, the actress refutes suggestions that she is a violent person, claiming that she has never exchanged punches with her mother or mother-in-law.

She described the allegation as not just a personal attack but satanic, adding that the accusation of beating her mother-in-law never happened and her family members, including her inlaws, can attest to it.

4. Basketmouth And AY: In April, Nigerian comedian and filmmaker AY sparked a social media craze with an interview about his 17-year rivalry with his colleague, Basketmouth, claiming the long-running dispute was caused by a botched commercial deal.

According to AY, the problem began when Basketmouth asked him to perform at a performance on his behalf and he refused to pay the agreed-upon N30,000.

AY stated that he contacted the organiser, who confirmed that he had paid payment prior to the concert and shared the feedback with his colleague, resulting in a brawl.

Basketmouth stated in a flashback video that surfaced online at the time that AY tampered with loyalty.

Basketmounth also stated in an interview with media personality Nedu on the ‘Honest Brunch’ podcast that he and AY had never been friends or had a close connection.

The comic said that AY was lying about their conflict in order to promote his next programme, claiming that this was his normal tactic.

He claims that 90% of AY’s disclosures during the interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo were all falsehoods.

Basketmouth, on the other hand, buried the issue with AY in November, stating he had forgiven him and everyone in the entertainment world who had insulted him.

5. Davido And Baby Mama Saga:

In June, Nigerian artist Davido became embroiled in a never-ending baby mama drama, with multiple women stating they were pregnant for him.

Notable were a French lady named Ivanna Bay and an American woman named Anita Brown, both of whom claimed to be pregnant for the celebrity.

6. Davido And Phyna: In October, Phyna and Davido spat on social media when the musician liked a message criticising the reality TV star.

Phyna moved to her X page to ask Davido what she had done wrong to deserve the vitriol, to which he replied that he didn’t know who she was and that his reaction was an honest mistake.

While some praised Davido, others chastised him for refusing Phyna, the winner of the Big Brother Naija reality programme in 2022.

7. Mohbad: Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, a Nigerian musician, died on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27 under suspicious circumstances, with footage of the artist being ridiculed and attacked circulating after his death.

Many Nigerians blamed his former record boss, Naira Marley, and his associate, Sam Larry, which led to their detention and release.
