Manchester United forward Anthony Martial “could leave” the club this summer if an “important” offer is received, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The Italian reporter says the Frenchman, who has scored 88 times for the Red Devils, is in the same boat as former captain Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay:
“At the moment, Anthony Martial is staying at Manchester United but I’d consider him in the same range of players as Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire – if he gets an important proposal, he could leave. Otherwise, he’ll stay and be part of Erik Ten Hag’s rotation squad. That’s the feeling around Martial now.”
Martial’s fitness has been a constant problem throughout the 27-year-old’s career. He even missed the start of pre-season with injury but he has been back in training for the last two weeks and it was somewhat surprising that he wasn’t involved against Athletic Bilbao, considering he hasn’t had any match action since May.
Ten Hag remains an admirer of the player
Despite his many injuries, manager Erik ten Hag is a clear fan of the France international’s abilities. Even a couple of weeks ago, the Dutchman praised Martial for being a “brilliant football player”.
However, the striker‘s inability to stay fit has forced the Dutchman into finding alternatives who can be trusted to remain available.
A £72m arrival will reduce Martial’s game time
The signing of Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta means Martial’s hopes of getting regular minutes this season have been dealt a blow.
There is no doubt that the Danish international will be the club’s first choice number nine, and Martial may have to be content with cameos off the bench in the league, as well as some occasional starts in the domestic cups.
Saying that, though, Hojlund is expected to miss out on the opening weeks of the season with his own injury so that could still provide Martial with the opportunity to make an impact.
