Rema Wins Big At The MTV Europe Music Awards, While Burna Boy Loses Three

Rema, actual name Divine Ikubor, is a Nigerian musician who won the first “Best Afrobeats” category at the MTV Europe Music Awards.

According to reports, the event was cancelled owing to the continuing conflict between Israel and Palestine militants, Hamas.

The winners were, however, revealed on November 6, 2023. The organisers created a new category for Rema, with contenders including Asake, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Davido, French starlet Aya Nakamura, and Rema.

Rema was named “Best Afrobeats” winner, while Tanzania’s Diamond Platnumz was named “Best African Act.”

However, Rema and Selena Gomez’s ‘Calm Down’ was defeated by Jung Kook and Latto’s ‘Seven’ in the “Best Collaboration” category.

Burna Boy, the Grammy-winning Nigerian artist, was disappointed to lose three prizes, including “Best Afrobeats,” “Best African Act,” and “Best Live Performer.”

This comes only two weeks after Burna Boy was stripped of all seven nominations for the 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards.

Taylor Swift, an American singer, topped the 2023 MTV Europe Music Awards winners list with three awards: Best Video, Best Artist, and Best Live.

Meanwhile, prominent Nigerian musician Ayodeji Balogun, professionally known as Wizkid, announced plans to leave the music industry on Sunday.

The Essence crooner announced this in a series of Instagram postings, indicating that he would be taking a four or five year break from music and possibly taking up football or golf.

Wizkid, who wrote in broken English, stated, “Back in 4 years, make una papa chop him money small or maybe five or I fit still go dey play ball now.

“Or make I start dey play golf. Fifa or wrestling b*tch!” All of una dey craze! Everybody dey mad.

“On some G shit, I hope you mofuckas alright body mind and soul and taking time out to enjoy with your loved ones.”
