RB Salzburg vs. Liverpool Video highlight: The Reds are defeated 1-0 in Austria by a strike from Benjamin Sesko.

Liverpool’s final preseason encounter before facing Manchester City in the Community Shield resulted in a 1-0 defeat against RB Salzburg.

The Reds thrashed RB Leipzig 5-0 last week, but they were unable to break down a tenacious home defence in the second half.
After misses from Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott, it was Benjamin Sesko who put the home side ahead after outwitting Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate on the break.

Jurgen Klopp made a slew of substitutions in the second half, but Salzburg goalkeeper Nico Mantl and his defence held firm, handing the Premier League giants a difficult night at the Red Bull Arena.

Despite RB Salzburg’s infrequent offensive threat, Noah Okafor’s speed and intelligent movement, as well as match winner Sesko, posed issues for Konate and Joe Gomez.

In Austria, Klopp started his two younger center-backs, who had a mixed opening 45 minutes at the Red Bull Arena.
Sesko almost punished Gomez’s bad header, and his location — as well as Konate’s recovery rate — were exposed on the Slovenian’s goal.

Without van Dijk alongside one of them — the Dutchman came in in the 60th minute — neither player took responsibility against a tough onslaught, and the two are anticipated to start on the bench against Man City at the King Power Stadium.

Nunez was never going to repeat his spectacular four-goal total against Leipzig, but his 45-minute cameo indicates he still has work to do as he adjusts into Klopp’s Liverpool.

Klopp has ignored preseason criticism of the Uruguayan, with the bulk of his performances indicating that the former Benfica striker will be a hit at Anfield.

Despite hitting the crossbar and driving Liverpool’s assault, Klopp elected to take him off at halftime as he continues to adjust to the group.

Klopp has already demonstrated with outstanding players such as Fabinho and Thiago that he will not push new arrivals into the starting XI unless they match his high standards of conditioning and performance, and Nunez still has a long way to go to secure a starting berth.
As Liverpool’s preseason campaign has progressed, Klopp has steadily shifted toward choosing stronger starting XIs, with a familiar look to the team that finishes the 90 minutes.

Eight changes on the hour mark suggest his thinking ahead of their match against Pep Guardiola’s City on July 30, with the full-time lineup likely to be quite similar to the one that begins against the Premier League winners.

Due to Alisson’s injury, Adrian will remain in goal, with Robert Firmino, Luis Diaz, and Mo Salah heading the attack, with Nunez on the bench.
