Ornstein Claims “Massive” Transfer Decision Is Set To Be Made As Liverpool Circle £70M Rated Chelsea Ace

Chelsea will have to make a “massive decision” on the future of Liverpool target Mason Mount, according to The Athletic journalist David Ornstein.

The trusted reporter claims there is “growing interest” in the England international, with Arsenal and Bayern Munich having joined the Reds and Manchester United in the race for the player’s signature, and Ornstein says there are no guarantees Chelsea will keep the player:

“There are two people in this equation – it is not a foregone conclusion that they [Chelsea] will get what they want, especially when there is growing interest in Mason Mount from the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, from Thomas Tuchel – who is very fond of him because he managed him – whether Bayern Munich are backing him on that we’ll have to wait and see.”

“It’s a massive decision for both parties. Chelsea’s view is either we renew or we’ll sell. Mason Mount has the power to stick around for another year, if he doesn’t want to sign another contract, and leave as a free agent in 2024.”

As Ornstein says, Mount’s club will reluctantly sell him this summer if they have no choice, with the midfielder closing in on the final year of his current deal.

Despite intense negotiations, an agreement over an extension still hasn’t been reached. The two sides are believed to be far apart on his salary. Reports suggest that he wants around £250,000 a week, while the Blues are only prepared to offer him £200,000 a week.

Liverpool will be watching developments intently over the coming weeks to see whether Mount is made available for transfer.
