Chelsea have not made any move to sign Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
The Argentinian international, who has scored 28 goals this season, has been suggested as a potential transfer target for the Blues. While Romano does say that the Blues have made no “concrete” attempt to sign Martinez, he suggests something could still happen when talks begin about Romelu Lukaku’s future:
“At the moment I’m not aware of any contact for Martinez, but let’s see what’s going to happen in the conversations between Inter Milan and Chelsea for Lukaku this month when they speak about that. But at the moment, with Martinez and Chelsea, there is still nothing concrete.”
Some sort of swap deal involving Martinez and Lukaku would be an intriguing prospect, but you still feel that Inter would be resistant to losing their top scorer.
Havertz’s potential departure places greater emphasis on finding a new striker
It is believed that Kai Havertz will be sold this summer if the Blues receive a decent bid for the German international. Both the club and the player are open to him leaving Stamford Bridge in the coming weeks.
His asking price is said to be around the £75m mark, which is roughly the same figure that Chelsea paid Bayer Leverkusen a few years ago. Real Madrid have been credited with an interest, although they are also considering other targets.
If Havertz is sold, it would increase the need to bring in another centre-forward, especially with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang also on his way out of the club.
Potential alternatives to Martinez
The likes of Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, Juventus’s Dusan Vlahovic, Montpellier’s Elye Wahi and Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic have all been linked with the Blues in recent months.
Out of those four, Osimhen would probably be the only one who could match the levels that Martinez can produce, so we shall see which player manager Mauricio Pochettino chooses to go after.
