Graeme Souness Predicts Whether United Can Beat Arsenal And City To The Title

Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness still believes it will be difficult for Manchester United to secure the Premier League title this season.

The former Liverpool player and manager claims it would need a dramatic “collapse” from both Arsenal and Manchester City to enable Erik ten Hag’s side to clinch top spot:

“It’s not impossible, I very much doubt it. I think several things would have to happen. City and Arsenal would have to have an incredible collapse, they’d have to fall off a cliff. I don’t think that will happen.”

“From United’s point of view for them to continue to win games they have to keep their main man fit and that’s Marcus Rashford – 22 [league] goals already this year, five goals last year. He isn’t finished. Keep him fit and they have a chance. But Arsenal and Man City, they’re not going to collapse, not in that manner.”

Souness does make a fair point, although he is slightly exaggerating the scale of the collapse that would be required for the Red Devils to finish first.

United are only three points behind City but it is effectively four due to goal difference. Even so, Pep Guardiola’s team would only need to drop points in two matches to lose their place above ten Hag’s men.

Arsenal are definitely a lot trickier to overhaul. If the Gunners do win their game in hand, the gap could be as big as eight points, meaning they would have to lose three of their other matches. As Souness says, it isn’t impossible but it’s best that United fans temper their expectations for now.
