England 1-2 France
Six minutes from time, England’s Harry Kane sent a penalty over the crossbar as defending champions France hung on to reach the 2022 FIFA World Cup semifinals thanks to Olivier Giroud’s close-range header.
Tottenham captain Kane scored from the penalty spot nine minutes into the second half, responding to Aurelien Tchouameni’s superb 25-yard shot that opened the scoring for the defending champions.
France got the best of the opening stages and rightly went ahead until Lloris pawed a thunderous long-range effort from Kane around a post in a tense quarterfinal at Al Bayt Stadium.
Jude Bellingham’s stinging attempt was tipped over the crossbar by Lloris and England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford kept out a Giroud volley from close range as both sides traded chances during the second half.
France will return to the same venue on Wednesday to face Morocco in the semifinals, while England will return home after failing to reach the last four in 2018.
France’s title defense continues! In the last act of a thrilling game, Marcus Rashford lofts a freekick onto the top of the net from just beyond the penalty area.
