Manchester United supporters have began to question Erik Ten Hag’s future at the club following a poor defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion over the weekend.
Today, we’ll look at Ten Hag’s performance after five Premier League games this season to see if he deserves to be fired.
We’ll also look at a possible replacement for Ten Hag if the Red Devils’ management decides to relieve him of his duties.
How is Manchester United doing so far this season?
So far this season, it is fair to say that United have been notably underperforming in the Premier League. Their performances have been woefully inadequate, as have their outcomes.
United have won two games, drawn zero, and lost three since their loss to Brighton. Even their triumphs over Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest were underwhelming at best and may have been influenced by luck.
United have had a dismal start to the season, and they appear to have regressed following a rather solid finish to the 2022/23 season.
Of course, Ten Hag is not entirely to blame. He has brought in several new players, including Rasmus Hojlund and Andre Onana, and it will take time for them to gel with the rest of the club.
However, perhaps the biggest indictment of Ten Hag’s performance this season is his inability to control his team. He has already fallen out with Jadon Sancho in a public manner – it seems he may be beginning to lose the dressing room. If this occurs, then his position at United will become untenable.
Who could United bring in to replace Ten Hag?
In terms of Ten Hag’s probable replacements, one name sticks out above the rest: Julian Nagelsmann. Chelsea targeted him earlier this year, but he turned off a transfer to the Blues.
A youthful head coach with a contemporary style of play, he may be the man United needs to restore stability and success to the club if Ten Hag demonstrates his inability to do so.
