David Ornstein Confirms Arsenal Are “Weighing Up” Move For 22M Atletico Madrid Striker

Arsenal are “weighing up” a January bid for Atletico Madrid striker Matheus Cunha, according to The Athletic reporter David Ornstein.

The trusted journalist claims that the Gunners are considering the Brazilian as a short-term solution to replace the injured Gabriel Jesus, who has been sidelined for three months with a knee injury.

However, it is believed that there are at least two other Premier League clubs interested in Cunha. Wolves have been exploring a potential double deal for the forward and his teammate Felipe.

Jorge Mendes’s involvement could help get the move to Molineux over the line but it is thought that the Midlands club may struggle to come up with the €50m (£43m) to sign both players.

Aston Villa are also keen on Cunha but, at this stage, Unai Emery’s side are not prioritising a move for the player.

It means that Arsenal do have a chance of securing the 23-year-old’s signature if they do so wish. He cost Atletico around £22m when he joined them from Hertha Berlin in August last year and he isn’t likely to cost much more than that now.

However, Cunha’s goal record is a major concern. He has only scored seven times in 54 appearances since arriving in Spain.
