Confirmed: Manchester United to announce Lisandro Martinez after the agreement of £57 million with Ajax for the defender to sign a five-year contract

Last season, the Ajax defender collaborated with new Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag; Martinez was also pursued by Arsenal, but has chosen Old Trafford as his future destination.

United will pay a fixed €57 million (£48.5 million) for the Argentina international, with a further €10 million (£8.5 million) in add-ons agreed between the two clubs. Martinez will reunite with former Ajax manager Erik Ten Hag, who signed him for the club in 2019, at Old Trafford.

The agreement is still subject to medical and visa approval, with completion anticipated in the coming days, before he signs a five-year contract in Manchester, with the option of an additional year, which would carry him through his 30th birthday.

Martinez uploaded an Instagram photo of himself and his agent on a plane with the message “going to Manchester” on Friday evening.
Arsenal was also interested in the Argentina international, but they were unsuccessful in their quest. Martinez picked Manchester United over Arsenal due of the Gunners’ playing style and the opportunity to play for Mikel Arteta.

As part of the normal solidarity payments involved in international transfers, almost €2 million (£1.7 million) of Martinez’s cost will be divided between his previous teams, Newell’s Old Boys and Defensa y Justicia, both headquartered in Argentina.
“United have required a left-sided centre-back, and the manager prefers someone who is at ease in possession.”

“Under Ten Hag, United will take a more aggressive approach, constructing play from the back, and he wants a defender who will be an indirect danger at set pieces, confident and forceful in the area.

“He knows Martinez well and believes he is the right person for the job. When the squad presses up, he’s a defender who is comfortable defending in wide expanses.

“He’ll be able to cover territory on his own, but he can also carry the ball out and form components of attacks, which is exactly what Ten Hag wants. He believes this is money wisely spent for United.”

“Martinez averaged more passes per 90 minutes than any other Eredivisie player last season, while just two players directed more passes forward per 90 minutes.”

“Those figures highlight Martinez’s ability to play through opposing lines, but he’s also skilled at altering plays and picking out teammates over greater distances.” Last season, no player at Ajax averaged more successful long passes per 90 minutes. Martinez, who was named Ajax’s player of the year for his part in the club’s Eredivisie title success last season, stands at just 5ft 9ins, making him diminutive for a centre-back.

“Last season at Ajax, he made more headed clearances (29) than any other player and won 79 of his 112 aerial duels, giving him a 71% success rate and ranking him second only to Harry Maguire among Manchester United and Arsenal’s current center-backs.” Martinez will face more demanding opponents in the Premier League, but he will also benefit from a good understanding of the game. He is recognised for anticipating striker runs and strategically positioning himself to make tackles and interceptions.

“Those attributes, along with his flexibility and technical ability, make him even more appealing to Premier League suitors.”
