Chelsea agree transfer deal worth £70M for Leicester City defender Wesley Fofana

Chelsea have finally struck a deal with Leicester City for Wesley Fofana, a 21-year-old central defender. Since the interest was made public, the French player has wished to work with Stamford Bridge manager Thomas Tuchel, and The Sun says that a proposal has already been approved. Chelsea will pay £70 million plus a substantial increase in prospective add-ons.

Fofana is one of Europe’s greatest young centre-backs, and Chelsea can afford to prepare for the future with their existing squad. Tuchel has Thiago Silva, Cesar Azpilicueta, and Trevoh Chalobah to call on as Fofana adjusts to the rigors of one of the world’s top teams.

And the centre-back is now likely to sign a six-year contract extension at Stamford Bridge until 2028.

Chelsea were prepared to walk away after Leicester rejected a third bid for £70 million on Tuesday.

City, though, has caved after making a fourth bid with better conditions.

When the initial proposal arrived this month, Fofana made it known to Brendan Rodgers that he was anxious to join Thomas Tuchel’s side.

The France U21 international was ruled out of last weekend’s 2-1 loss to Southampton due to a mental health issue.

Rodgers has already said that Fofana will not feature in Leicester’s match against Chelsea tomorrow.

Leicester had insisted that Fofana will stay after turning down many proposals from Chelsea.

They were demanding a world-record sum of more than £80 million.

However, a breakthrough in negotiations occurred this week, with the Blues proposing an acceptable proposal on Friday.
The Foxes are expected to earn a tidy profit on £75m Fofana after signing him from Saint Etienne at £36.5m in 2020.

During his first season at the King Power Stadium, he excelled in 38 appearances.

However, a leg injury limited him to just 12 games last season.

Fofana will now compete for a berth in Chelsea’s back five, with a space on Thiago Silva’s right side up for grabs.

However, his presence enhances the prospect of Tuchel experimenting with a back four.
