Boost for Chelsea as Juventus winger Federico Chiesa is “seeking” a move to the Premier League

It was reported in the Italian press last week that Chelsea, Liverpool and Newcastle were interested in the Italian international but FT claims that both the Reds and the Magpies are not pursuing the player.

They don’t mention the links to Mauricio Pochettino’s team but it seems clear that, if the Blues do want to sign Chiesa, they wouldn’t face much competition for his signature.

Chiesa is said to be unhappy at Juve, having become disillusioned with life under manager Max Allegri, whose preference is for a defensive style of play.

Juventus are open to letting the 25-year-old leave this summer but they have slapped a €60m (£51m) asking price on the Italian.

Do Chelsea need Chiesa?

Even a few weeks ago, you wouldn’t have thought a winger would be top of Chelsea’s list of priorities in terms of transfer targets. After all, the club already had Raheem Sterling, Mykhailo Mudryk, Noni Madueke, Hakim Ziyech, Christian Pulisic and Callum Hudson-Odoi all in the first-team squad.

However, it is looking increasingly likely that Pochettino may be left with just Sterling, Mudryk and Madueke as his only natural options out wide. In that context, a bid for Chiesa does look more realistic.

His asking price may be an obstacle

Despite the prospect of signing a wide player moving up the agenda, spending over £50m on one still doesn’t seem to be a likely scenario.

If Chiesa is still at Juve by August, there could be a potential opportunity for a loan deal with an option to buy. Considering Chelsea agreed a similar arrangement with the same team for Denis Zakaria, it is definitely a possibility, but we shall see how things develop over the coming days and weeks.
