BBC Pundit Claims Liverpool Ace Reminds Him Of A “Young Thierry Henry” After Tearing United Apart

BBC pundit Troy Deeney says one of Cody Gakpo‘s goals against Manchester United at the weekend was reminiscent of the “young Thierry Henry”.

The Liverpool forward scored an outstanding brace in the sensational 7-0 win at Anfield on Sunday and, while Deeney believes the Dutchman’s style of play does remind him of Roberto Firmino, his finishing had more in common with an Arsenal legend:

“Gakpo through the middle is like a new 2.0 of Bobby Firmino. The three of them occupy the top line. [Gakpo] is like a young Thierry Henry there with his finish.”

It’s high praise indeed from Deeney, but it’s probably wise to keep expectations in check with Gakpo, despite his impressive display.

The 23-year-old had a very difficult start to life in England, although he has looked like a new player since scoring his first goal against Everton. He needs to capitalise and push on from here to ensure he keeps his place in the team.

Nobody really expected Gakpo to play down the middle, considering he had almost exclusively been deployed as a left winger by his previous team PSV, but he seems to be thriving in the Firmino role. Whether he will end up being as successful as the Brazilian, though, we shall have to wait and see.
