With a 3-1 victory against Real Madrid in La Liga, Atletico Madrid secured capital bragging rights. Alvaro Morata scored twice and Antoine Griezmann scored once as Real Madrid’s unbeaten start to the season came to an end. Toni Kroos scored for the visitors, but it was a rare bright spot on an otherwise bleak evening for Real. Barcelona now leads the table with 16 points, one more than Real Madrid.

Alvaro Morata scored twice as Atletico Madrid defeated Real Madrid in the season’s first capital city derby.
In the fourth minute, Morata’s header from Samuel Lino’s inswinging cross from the left flank was glanced home by Atleti.
Antoine Griezmann then leapt backwards to head home Saul Niguez’s cross, extending the advantage.

Real enjoyed a lot of possession but mostly threatened with long-range attempts, one of which was hard for Jan Oblak to keep out as he dived to his right side in vain.
The visitors were the better side at halftime, but Atleti were back in front a minute later when Saul’s exquisite cross was nodded in by Morata for their third headed goal of the day.
Real came closest to decreasing the margin via Aurelien Tchouameni and Antonio Rudiger, while Mario Hermoso’s header sailed over the crossbar at the opposite end of the field.
Real Madrid are now third in the league, while Diego Simeone’s side are fifth.
