Aston Villa Carney Chukwuemeka agreed a deal with Chelsea

Carney Chukwuemeka of Aston Villa is likely to join Chelsea after six years at Villa Park; the 18-year-old had a year left on his contract and had no interest in signing an extension; the England U19 international was part of the squad that won the U19 Euros this summer.

Chelsea have agreed a deal of around £20 million with Aston Villa for the permanent signing of Carney Chukwuemeka.

The 18-year-old has been granted permission to fly to London to address personal matters and to undertake medical examinations.

He made 12 Premier League appearances but only started twice last season, and it is thought he is eager to gain more top-flight playing experience.

Sources reported in late July that Chukwuemeka, who was a member of England’s U19 squad that won the European Championship this summer, had no interest in discussing a new contract with the club he has been with since the age of 12.

Barcelona had expressed interest, while Borussia Dortmund had inquired about signing him. Chukwuemeka was eager to speak with Dortmund about the possibility, having seen the opportunities afforded to other young England exports such as Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham.

Stephen Gerrard previously indicated he remained in his plans for the season, despite missing the team’s summer tour of Australia, saying: “The best thing for him would be to continue his training schedule back Bodymoor (Heath training centre).””

This summer, the Blues have already signed Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly, as well as Southampton and Arsenal teenagers Eddie Beach and Omari Hutchinson.

Chukwuemeka is an excellent player. He was named the best 16-year-old in the country at the age of 16, and he was already starting for Villa’s U23s. He is the crown jewel of Villa’s youth system, and they are very proud of him.

“This is shocking – not in the manner that Chelsea has come up with a few surprises – but it was expected that he would be headed somewhere in Europe. Dortmund was quite interested, as was Milan, and Barcelona got very far in discussions. It was just the price tag that turned those teams off.

“While he is a tremendous talent at 18, it is still a bit much to pay since there are no certainties about how he will grow in the future.”
