Arsenal vs Manchester United predictions

Arsenal have not won the Premier League title since 2004. Theirs is the youngest squad in the division and Mikel Arteta is in his first managerial job.

People have been waiting for Arsenal’s incredible title push to fizzle down, which makes sense.

But, as they prepare to play their 19th match of the season, the Gunners are showing no signs of slowing down.

Last weekend’s 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur was perhaps their greatest victory of the season.

Granted, Spurs are not playing especially well at the moment, but Arsenal’s ease of victory at their arch-rivals’ home was incredibly remarkable.

Arteta’s side are on course to get 99 points this term. That is highly unlikely, but it goes to show just how dominant they have been up to now.

Sunday’s showdown with Manchester United will be another tough test.

Erik ten Hag’s side will be looking to make a statement of intent of their own in north London. An away win would move United to within five points of top spot.

But Arsenal rarely drop points in front of their own fans and we fancy the table-toppers to march on with another victory this weekend.

Arsenal have still only lost one match all season – a 3-1 defeat by Manchester United in the first meeting between these sides in September.

It was a strange game. Arsenal were superior in virtually every department, yet they were beaten pretty comfortably in the end.

A failure to turn impressive approach play into clear-cut chances ultimately proved costly, while Arteta arguably went too gung-ho in an attempt to win the game in the second half.

Since then, however, Arsenal have been near-perfect. They have dropped points in just two of their last 12 matches, drawing with Southampton and Newcastle United.

Their opponents are also in top shape. Manchester United had to settle for a draw against Crystal Palace on Wednesday due to a late Michael Olise free kick, but they still have 16 points from the remaining 18 available.

Nonetheless, Arsenal has won seven of its eight games at the Emirates this season. Arteta’s team is extremely difficult to beat at home.

They also had a whole week to prepare for this game, whereas United could only focus on it on Thursday, when most of their players would have been healing anyhow.

Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals – 19/20 (Spreadex)

Arsenal’s defensive unit has changed a fair amount since last season. Of the back four most commonly used in 2021/22, only one member (Gabriel Magalhaes) is still playing in the same position.

Ben White has been shifted to right-back, while William Saliba has made himself one of the first names on Arteta’s team sheet alongside Gabriel at centre-half.

Out at left-back, Oleksandr Zinchenko has brought the technical ability and tactical intelligence that made him a key part of Pep Guardiola’s squad at Manchester City for several years.

Arsenal has surrendered the fewest goals this season, trailing just Newcastle. However, maintaining a clean sheet against Manchester United will be difficult.

Since a 0-0 stalemate with Newcastle in mid-October, Ten Hag’s team has not failed to score in any of their 16 matches in all competitions.

Arsenal is a forward-thinking squad that wants to take the game to the opposition. Earlier in the season, same approach resulted in victory over Tottenham and Liverpool at the Emirates, although the hosts did not maintain a clean sheet in each game.

Both of those games had more than 2.5 goals, and the match against Manchester United on Sunday might be similar.
