Arsenal could complete the signing of Jurrien Timber from Ajax as early as “this week”, according to Algemeen Dagblad.
The Dutch newspaper claims there is now confidence that a deal will be agreed for the defender to make the switch to the Emirates.
It is believed that the Gunners have tabled an improved offer in the region of €48m (£41m) for Timber, having had their opening bid of €35m (£30m) rejected at the start of last week.
The Netherlands international is thought to have already agreed personal terms with Mikel Arteta’s side so, if Ajax do sign off on the deal, only a medical would need to be arranged before the move is rubberstamped.
Arsenal have moved fast to snap up Timber
Up until a couple of weeks ago, the Gunners hadn’t really been mentioned as a potential suitor for the 22-year-old, with the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool said to have been more likely to make a bid for the player.
However, it seems the London club have been keeping tabs on Timber’s progress for quite a while, and they are now clear favourites to secure defender’s signature.
A Perfect fit for the right-back position
Finding competition for Ben White was one of the priorities for the summer transfer window. Takehiro Tomiyasu’s fitness record means Arsenal cannot rely on the Japanese international to provide sufficient backup.
Considering White had to be converted into a fullback at the start of the campaign as well, it seems like a good idea to bring someone in who is more comfortable in the role.
As we explained in an article on Monday, Timber has all the attributes, not only to be an effective right-back, but also to be employed in an inverted fullback position if required. After having played centre-half for Ajax all season as well, the Gunners could be getting an extremely versatile player.
